Niseko Avalanche Info No.61

Niseko base 5.00am: -6°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -76°, SE11m/s, no new snow, snowstorm. Annupuri 1150m: -9°, SSE12m/s, no new snow. Hirafu 1250m: -7°, strong southerly wind, snowstorm, trace new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:SSE13m/s, 1007hPa, wave 0.7m.

With the approach of a low pressure system, a strong SE wind has picked up. Although there is no new snowfall, strong wind and snow are causing snowdrift development in various locations on ridgelines above 800m. From observation, the older existing snowdrifts are stable and there is no obvious weak layer. The general avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to be open, although dependent on lift operation. Please listen to the patrols advice. There is almost no fresh lines to found out of bounds now. Its better to stay in the resort and practice carving on a day like today.

Do not enter strictly off limits area Haru noTaki looking for fresh tracks. There are lots of cracks on the slope where the accident occurred last year. Haru no Taki is loaded with a lot of snow this year and the possibility of a full depth avalanche is high from now on. Surveillance is being increased . Be careful.

Niseko Rules were developed to stem the frequent accidents that were occurring on the Niseko mountains, not for any tourist promotion purpose. An avalanche is a natural phenomenon and accidents happen only when there is a person there. In Niseko we not only respect your freedom to ski out of bounds, but we also want that to happen safely. Accidents are more likely to happen in bad weather. Plan flexibly depending on weather conditions. The weather will improve soon.
