Evaluating all data and observation results, the avalanche risk is extremely high in leeward slopes under 800m elevation where cornices and snowdrifts have drastically developed. The peak of the storm was at around 4am and even if the wind had calmed down now, it will take all day for the snow slabs to stabilise. Most gates will be kept shut today. The chair lifts might operate, but please refrain from ducking the ropes to access the out of bounds areas. It is a dangerous day today and completely different conditions fro yesterday. The snow is wet, but is not bad for this time of the season. Beware of overspeeding and hitting trees. The wave height of the Sea of Japan is also rising. Act wisely.

From observation and data analysis, the avalanche risk is extremely high on leeward slopes above 800 meters and in valleys where cornices have grown rapidly. Wind and snow peaked around 4am so even if the wind subsides, it will take at least the rest of the day for slabs to stabilize. Main gates will be closed. If the lifts can run today, do not duck ropes to leave the course. Danger. Todays conditions are completely different to yesterday. The new snow is wet, but OK for this time of year. Be careful getting out of control and hitting at tree. Wave heights at sea are starting to rise. Act wisely.

Based on observation and data snowdrifts have started to stabilise, however the avalanche risk continues above 1000m where new snow has fallen. Always be careful in valleys and gullies where there is a large elevation change, like on Mt Yotei. Valleys and gullies should never be used as ski routes. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please follow the Patrols advice. BackBowl sidewalls and the Osawa cornice slope near 1000m are also dangerous areas. Conditions are different to yesterday, better to avoid these areas. This information is provided to ski resort users to prevent out of bounds accidents. Although beacons aren't mandatory, you should have them. You will have a better chance of saving each other if you have them. Ducking ropes to go out of bounds is strictly prohibited in Niseko. Please respect Niseko rules. A pamplet explaining the rules is available at all ticket counters. Even though it's spring at the base, it's still winter higher up in the mountains. Have a nice day.

Remember outside the gates is a wild natural mountain, not a ski resort. This information is published to respect the freedom of resort users to ride out of bounds and to serve as a reference for their safety. No mountain is safe. Outside the gates your skill and knowledge will constantly be tested. Have a nice day. Beware getting snow blind today from strong reflections from the snow surface. Wear eye protection.

The isobars are starting to spread, however a strong westerly wind will persist above 1150m during the morning. Gate 2 & 3 will not open during the morning. The wind is strong but the snowfall is scarce. Snowdrifts generated by wind-blown snow have accumulated in the gullies and caution is required in gullies around 1000m elevation. Shallow avalanches are to be expected in some areas, and skiing gullies should be avoided. The season is shifting to Spring, however winter continues in the mountains and safety is never guaranteed. You should not put your life in stake for skiing powder snow. Death terminates all possibilities. Thinking that you’ll be fine is just being overconfident, and Nature will have no restraints punishing your mistakes. The Niseko Rules have been made out of necessity after experiencing many accidents. If you are using the resort’s chairlifts, you must abide by the Rules. Niseko respects the freedom to ski out of bounds, but the rules must be honoured to keep it that way. The groomers condition is epic today. Have a good one.

The avalanche risk is very high in slopes with these large slabs, whether weak layers are present or not, especially in 1000-1400m elevation gullies and steep walls. Gates opening is not decided, please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Avalanches are natural phenomena and are not an accident unless humans are involved in one. Understanding the cause of the slide after the incident won’t bring back the deceased. Our sincere condolences to the two victims in Mt Yotei. Better not think that accidents only happen to others. There are no notable new deposits of snowdrifts and the avalanche risk in general slopes outside the gates is low. Peak gates are scheduled to open. Always be cautious in steep untracked slopes of all aspects above 1000m elevation. Do not stay put on an avalanche runway, better off not skiing there. Many accidents have been happening. The more people come, the chances of accidents will rise. If fresh tracks can’t be found nearby, people venture out, or are being guided to the surrounding peak, to find a beautiful untracked powder slope. As people repeat this process, accidents become unavoidable. Kariba, Rishiri, Iwao and Yotei; so many avalanche accidents have happened in Hokkaido this season. And according to Heinrich’s Law, there will probably be more accidents to come, because people go in the mountains just for the way down, without acknowledging the danger of winter mountains and with just only a thin veneer of knowledge. Accidents do not happen because the mountains are dangerous, they happen because people walk into the mountains without understanding the risk they’re taking. Ignorance is the cause of accidents. Skiing in the gullies at this time of the season is a lack of common sense. It may be good today, but tomorrow may be completely different. Everybody should be aware that, most of the time, past experiences are useless. Many realise this fact when they have an accident. Spring time is yet to come in the mountain and the slabs in the gullies aren’t stable. Guides and tour leaders are responsible for their group’s safety.

The northern edge of the high-pressure system is sitting over Hokkaido and the wind remains relatively strong in high elevation and the sea. No snow has fallen overnight. Many people went out the gates to enjoy the unexpected dump yesterday, and no major accident cases have been reported. There are no notable developments of snowdrifts and looking at observation results and weather data, the general avalanche risk is low today. Peak gates will open if the top-chairlifts operate. Always be conscious that outside the gate is outside the ski resorts. Be prepared. “Jagaïmo” or Potato ice-balls are starting to form in lower elevation groomers as the temperature is rising. Beware of overspeeding. Cracks are also starting to open up and the risk of glide avalanches will rise in south-facing slopes. Do not enter strictly off-limit areas. Biodegradable pink tape has been put in the Anbetsu area, with the cooperation of a few guests, in order to prevent getting lost and falling off of the cliff. Do not go beyond the tape for your own safety. The season is slowly shifting to Spring, but be always vigilant in the Mountains. Hazards are always present out there. One injury could ruin your vacation. Have a nice day.

There are some off piste slopes with fresh snow. All gates are expected to be open. The cold temperatures are keeping the snow in good condition. There are lots of people out in the mountains. Avoid triggering knolls and cornices, and also traversing under cornices, there will be people below you. Dont wait around in the valley, creek or gully bottoms., these are avalanche paths and can trap you.. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but accidents are caused by humans. Watch for a sudden change in weather as the pressure gradient is starting to change. Do not duck ropes to enter strictly off limits areas looking for fresh snow. In order to keep Gate 10 open, we need the cooperation of locals and enthusiasts. For now, we ask that you respect the Niseko rules and cooperate with the patrol. If everyone works together we can keep Gate 10 open. Outside of the gates is not part of the ski area and there is always great dangers lurking there. A strong awareness is required for those who ride out of bounds. This is a ski resort and if you want to ride the lifts you are obligated to follow the rules. The snow is still miraculously good. Did you have a beacon? Have a nice day.

Mountain base: -8℃, trace new snow, good visibility. Moiwa800m: -7.8℃, NNW7.3m/s, small snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: -8℃, NW0.9m/s, 5cm new snow. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the weather is calm over the mountains and the sea. Weak snowfall continues as cold air is flowing in. According to observations and tests, snowdrift development is small, the avalanche risk on the slopes under 1000m elevation is low. All the gates are scheduled to open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Have the beacon with you, it may save you as well as your friends. Outside of the gates are not ski resorts. Do not casually follow someone else to go outside of the gates. Repeat, it is not a ski resort once you step out of the gates. Do not ride simultaneously. Do not traverse across knoll and cornice slopes. Some parts of those slopes are prone to shallow surface slab avalanches. Cracks are slowly formed this year due to low snowfall. However there are signs of cracks so be careful of falling into them and into creeks. Some cracks are caused by geothermal heat. It is dangerous if you fall from head first. Avoid going out of the gates alone. The number of people who do not know the rules is increasing again. Persistently make sure everyone is aware of the Niseko Rules. Do not duck ropes. Do not stay in the gully bottoms at any time. Snow is still good.

The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the weather is calm over the mountains and the sea. There might not be snow falling, but cold air is still flowing in. According to observations, the snowdrifts that developed in leeward slopes are now mostly stable. The general avalanche risk is low and all gates are scheduled to open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. This avalanche information evaluates the hazards based on weather and snowfall transition. The wind generates snowdrifts and builds cornices. The snow brought by the wind has broken crystals and accumulates in leeward slopes. Those snowdrifts consolidate and stabilise with time, however if these snowdrifts are being stimulated before sinter-consolidation, their structures ruptures and cause an avalanche. The fracture is transmitted throughout the slope in a matter of a split second. Most avalanche accidents, not only in Niseko, occur in these circumstances. Extra caution is required during and just after storms, no matter the slope aspect. The snow particles are equally wind-affected whether on windward or leeward slopes. Accident prevention measures in Niseko are based on this approach. Snow crystal types, surface hoar, south-coast cyclones, storms slabs… Many terms are being used these days, but just knowing those terms will not save you from accidents. The snow above 800m elevation is in epic condition, however a little mediocre in the trees. Is your beacon turned on? Winter sports will never be 100% safe.
