This season’s avalanche report is finished. From today, the peak gates will be kept open except gates no. 4&5. It is strongly prohibited to duck the ropes and step out of bounds, always use the access gates. Having a good car doesn’t necessarily mean you’re safe to drive; in the nature, we are always required to control ourselves. Thinking that you can avoid accidents by acquiring knowledge, is the same thing as thinking that you won’t have an accident if you’re driving a good car. Being aware and cautious of what you do will save your life. The ski resort is not only interested in expanding tourism industry and making profit, but is strongly concerned about all resort users’ safety.

ニセコ山系はヌレザラメから春のザラメ雪への移行期でエリア外の雪は悪く滑りにくい。気温上昇と雨の影響で亀裂がさらに発達し、標高1000m付近からの大規模な全層なだれの危険が続いている。スキー場利用者の安全のため全ゲートは閉じられる。谷に入ることは危険。今日はエリア外に出てはならない。パトロールの指示に従いスキー場内にとどまること。視界が悪い。無理をすべきではない。

0℃, cloudy with thick fog above 500m, the visibility is bad and the sea of Japan is calm. The wet grain snow around 800m has re-frozen overnight. The snow accumulation temperature is rising, -0.3℃ from the surface to 1.5m depth and the temperature close to the ground is also rising (-3℃). The mountain is now shifting from wet grains to corn snow condition, the snow in out of bounds area is difficult to ski. The temperature rise and the rain have made the cracks get bigger and the risk of a massive full depth avalanche is continuing. All gates will be closed for the sake of all resort users. ６時標高８００ｍの気温＋２．２℃。過去１７時間の間も＋２．１〜＋２．８℃と気温は高い状態で推移しています。
昨日からほぼ一昼夜続いた雨の影響で、表層部の雪の水分量は増え「ぬれざらめ」化は進み、その厚さを増しています。風も弱く天候は落ち着きはじめていますが、日中の温度上昇に伴い急斜面では湿雪による表層雪崩に注意して下さい。亀裂のある斜面は増え、その幅も広がり続けています。融雪も急激に進み地表の温度の高い場所では深い穴も増えて来ています。また、ゲートに設置してあるマップなどを参考に全層雪崩への注意も引き続き行って下さい。
山頂付近は現在、濃霧により視界が非常に悪い状態です。視界の回復がみられればゲートはオープンの予定です。パトロールの意見を尊重して下さい。

Due to yesterday’s rain, wet-grain layer has become thicker, the wind has calmed down and the weather seems to stabilize, however a surface slab slide of this wet layer needs to be considered today when the temperature starts rising during the day. Cracks are increasing and getting wider, some holes are also forming in hot land surface temperature spots. Beware of full depth avalanches, please check the maps and photos at the gates. The peak is covered with a thick fog and visibility is very bad. The gates will open if the visibility turns better. Please ask for the ski patrol’s opinion.

融解と凍結の繰り返しで、南よりの斜面の多くは積雪内の「ざらめ」の割合が増え続け、標高１０００ｍ以下では積雪深２００ｃｍ付近まで−０．３℃〜−０．５℃と温度勾配の少ない雪温の高い状態が５日間続いています。昨日までにも雪庇の崩壊や小規模な全層雪崩が南よりの沢などで起きています、全層雪崩の発生のタイミングを予測することは難しく、ほぼ不可能です。沢のボトムなど雪崩の通り道に立ちどまることのないように注意するしかありません。
山頂付近視界不良のため、２，３，４番ゲートはクローズとなります。パトロールの意見を尊重してください。

6am, +0.9℃, rain with 5.9m/s SW wind at 800m. Rain/sleet is also falling at 1000m. Due to repeated melting and freezing, the snow is turning into corn snow. This layer of corn snow, where snow temperature is high (-0.3 to -0.5℃) for the last few days, is growing down to 200cm deep below 1000m and could become a cause of a full depth avalanche. Actually, small full depth avalanche or cornice collapse is already happening in south facing valleys. These full depth avalanches are almost impossible to predict. The only way to avoid them is to not be in the avalanche path when it happens, i.e. not standing in the gulley bottom. The peak gates will be closed due to poor visibility. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions.

The snow is melting fast in south facing slopes, and the danger of a massive full depth slide from the cracks around 1200m is rising. Don’t traverse steep slopes such as Backbowl’s sidewalls foolishly. Guides shouldn’t take people carelessly in such places as well. Small-scale full depth avalanche or blocks slides should also be considered in cracked slopes below treeline. Don’t stop in gulley bottom to avoid accident. The snow condition at this time of the season is variable from crusty surface, slushy corn snow to wind-blown packed snow or rock hard rippled ice… Be careful not to loose control. -4℃, no snowfall and a beautiful sunny day. 3m/s northerly wind with 1m waves at cape Shakotan. The view from the peak is excellent. Hirafu patrol reported that some snowdrifts have developed in gulley lines and are relatively unstable. The strong northerly wind that persisted for 20hours has now calmed down and left a thin layer of wind blown snowdrifts. The sun and temperature factor will make these slabs easy to slide and a thin (<15cm) avalanche will be likely to be trigger by skiing stimulation. Be careful in wide-open steep slopes. A massive full depth avalanche hazard, involving rock and mud, is rising in place with a lot of snowdrift accumulation such as Backbowl’s or Osawa’s 1100m line or Mikaeri. The gulley bottom under 800m will become the avalanche path, try to avoid skiing at the bottom of the gulley. Peak gates will open at 9am. There is not much information other than general awareness info, however playing in winter mountains always involves danger. Be aware of the risk you’re taking, ask for advices from the ski patrol and enjoy your day.

The development of wind-blown snowdrifts is calming down, but the base of the cornices on ridgelines have been wind-cut (blown-off) and the cornices are likely to collapse. Anywhere within 5m from the tip is to be considered dangerous. The wind will calm down, temperature will rise and the snow will continue melting. This will make the snow temperature around the surface rise (0℃) but the deeper snow will remain cold (-5 to -7℃), which could lead to a major full depth avalanche from cracks formed in steep slopes. Try to always avoid cracked steep open faces and gulley bottoms, to stay away from being involved in accidents. Peak gates will open at 9am, seek for ski patrol’s advice at the gates before stepping out of the resort area.

山麓6時-3℃降雪なし快晴、海上積丹岬南西14m/s波高3m。標高1100mデータ12時間、西寄りの風強く平均12m/s最大20m/s。標高800m以上西側、沢の落ち込み、ノールには朝までに「飛雪」による雪庇、ふきだまりが発達。大沢、鉱山の沢及びモイワ見返り稜線では雪庇やふきだまりの崩壊、破断面40cm以内の表層雪崩の危険 がある。風下急斜面、ノールを切ってはならない。強風のためトップリフト運行は調査中。リフトが回れば山頂ゲートは開かれる。しかし全山トラックだらけで滑りにくい。雪を求め立入り禁止区域を滑ってはならない。安易にロープをくぐってはならない。スキー場は利用者にルールの尊重を求めている。春の全層なだれの時期が迫っている。「絶対に」谷底にとどまってはならない。土石流を伴うこの雪崩はきわめて危険。パトロールの意見を聞くこと。

Cornices and snowdrifts due to wind-blown snow developed in drops and knolls in western area above 800m. Beware of collapsing cornices and surface slab slide (up to 40cm thick) in Osawa, Backbowl and Moiwa/Mikaeri ridge line. Better not traverse leeward steep slopes and knolls. The peak lifts may not be operational due to strong wind; if they eventually do, the peak gates will open as well. However, the whole mountain is pretty much tracked out and the conditions are bad. Do not duck ropes and seek fresh snow in strictly off limits areas. Niseko’s ski resorts are demanding all guests to respect the rules. The mountain is shifting into spring time full depth avalanche season, “NEVER” remain in the gulley bottom. Full depth avalanche involving rock & mud slides is extremely powerful and deadly. Seek for ski patrol’s advice.

山麓6時-3℃降雪なし。海上西風11m/s 波高1m。1100mデータ西の風10m/s以内で推移。昨日の降雪は最大20cm、トラックは埋まっていないが部分的にはまだ良い。日射の影響で湿った新雪は朝までに凍結して再結晶。西側では風下に移動して不安定に斜面を覆い急斜面では流れやすい。山は急速に春に移行している。雪温上昇と凍結の繰り返しにより3/01層下75cm以上は収縮してスラブ化が進み、大沢、鉱山の沢及び見返りの沢、標高1000m付近のふきだまり斜面では全層なだれリスクが上がっている。この雪崩の破壊力、到達距離は大きく危険。谷底を避けること。人がいなければ事故は起きない。雪庇は内部に多くの空洞をもち不安定。ニセコでは雪庇先端から5m以内に近寄ってはならない。崩落は突然起こる。各山頂ゲートは9時に開かれる。良い春山を。

-3℃ and no new snowfall this morning. The wind is blowing at 11m/s westerly with 1m swell at the coast and around 10m/s west at 1100m. Yesterday’s snow accumulated up to 20cm, not enough to cover all the tracks but some areas remains good today. The sun made the fresh snow wet, that froze overnight and re-crystalize. This snow has drifted leeward and unstably covered some slopes, easily sliding in steep faces. The mountain is quickly shifting into spring. 75cm or deeper under March 1st layer is now becoming one thick slab due to repeated melting and freezing. Full depth avalanche hazard is rising in Osawa, Backbowl, Mikaeri and all snowdrifted slopes around 1000m altitude. Full depth avalanche are super destructive and travel a very long distance. Avoid the gulley bottom which is the avalanche path. Accidents won’t happen if no one is there. Cornices are also becoming very unstable due to air pockets forming inside them, better not approach within 5m from the tip. They would collapse suddenly. Peak gates will open at 9am. All data show that the general avalanche hazard is low today. The snow in sun-exposed slopes will quickly turn to corn-snow, spring condition. The snow in the shade will remain good for a while. Many cracks have been observed in Higashi-one 800m area. These cracks can’t be seen from above, be careful not to fall in them. The risk of a full depth avalanche is rising in Kozan no sawa (Backbowl), Osawa, Mikaeri no sawa and the NW face. These full depth avalanches cannot be predicted by snow layer observations or weather transition; they just happen suddenly, are extremely powerful catching rocks and mud on their way and travel a long distance. Always avoid skiing the gulley bottom to protect you from accidents. Beware of collapsing cornices. Peak gates will open at 9am.

Remember that the resort is not recommending out of bounds skiing but is tolerating it, all resort users must follow the rules, ask for ski patrol’s advice at the gates and step out from there. One must not enter strictly off limit areas to find fresh tracks. The mountain is now shifting into spring and the risk of a major scale full depth avalanche from 1200m snowdrifted leeward open faces is rising. 山麓6時-6℃晴、海上穏やか。新たなふきだまりの発達はない。山はゆっくりと春に移行している。標高1100m付近、バックボウル、大沢など稜線直下の厚いふきだまりの斜面では亀裂の発生が大規模雪崩につながる危険が出始めている。春の早い時期に起こる全層雪崩は流下距離、破壊力ともに大きく、危険。ゲートに掲示 される写真を見ること。新雪はないが天気も雪も良く、一般的斜面の雪崩リスクは低い。雪崩通路となる谷底に滑り込まないこと。そこにいなければ事故に遭わずに済む。雪庇下など急斜面のトラバースをしないこと。ゲートでパトロールの意見を聞き楽しい山の一日を。ゲートは9時に開かれる。

-6℃, sunny and calm day on the mountain or at sea level. There is no development of new snowdrifts, the mountain is slowly shifting to spring. Cracks are starting to form in leeward steep faces just below the ridge, such as 1100m Backbowl or Osawa. These cracks can become the cause of a major full depth avalanche which is the fastest, most powerful and most dangerous of the avalanches and often happens in early spring. Have a look at the pictures posted at the gates. There is no fresh snow but the weather is fine and the general avalanche risk is low today. Avoid traversing steep slopes under cornices and staying in the bottom of the gulley in order to minimize the risk of being involved in an accident. Please seek for advice at the gates, and have a safe enjoyable day. Gates will open at 9am.

山麓6時-6℃降雪なし、高曇り。山頂海上ともに穏やか。山系すべての斜面にはトラックがつき新雪はわずか。降雪推移から積雪は安定し全体の雪崩リスクは低い。視界は午後まで良い。新雪を求め立入り禁止区域に入ってはならない。ニセコでは立入り禁止区域の滑走が厳しく禁止されている。各山頂ゲートは9時に開けられる。スキー場エリア外へは必ずゲートから出ること。安易にロープをくぐってはならない。標高1200m北西斜面では深部層からの雪崩の危険が続いている。不用意にノールを刺激してはならない。休憩は沢を避け、景色が良く風のあたらない尾根地形で。
山は春に移行している。まだ雪は降る。良い一日を。


-6℃, high overcast and no new snowfall at the base. The peak and the sea are both calm. The whole range is tracked out and fresh snow is virtually non-existent. The layers are stable and the avalanche risk is generally low today. Visibility should remain good until this afternoon. In Niseko, it is severely prohibited to ski the strictly off limit area, do not enter those areas to seek fresh snow. Don’t duck ropes but always use the access gates to step out of bound, the peak gates will open at 9:00. There is always a chance of a deeper layer slide in 1200m NW slopes, try not to stimulate the knolls and refrain from resting in the gulley, instead better stop on a ridge (convex) terrain where the view is good and protected from the wind. The mountain is slowly shifting into spring, but more snow will fall soon. Have a nice day.

山麓6時-8℃降雪ふきだまりともになし、快晴。日本海は穏やか。3/01層上、ふきだまりは安定し各データ推移から雪崩リスクは低い。北斜面標高1200m、イワオ側稜線などの急斜面ではウインドクラストが割れる板状なだれに注意。午後のバックボウルや大沢上部斜面では、表面湿雪による浅いなだれが起こりやすくなる。 10日間続いた悪天候で沢地形や尾根位置に変化が見られる。北または北東の風の影響を受けた東尾根奥、北西斜面五色温泉側のノール、尾根上部では滑走ルートの選択に注意。北西斜面では、過去に道道まで達した大規模な表層雪崩の例がある。斜面下や沢の中で休んではならない。各山頂ゲートは9時に開けられる。ゲートの外は スキー場ではない。良い一日を。


-8℃, beautiful sunny day, no snowfall and no new development of snowdrifts. The sea of Japan is calm, the snow on top of Mar 1st layer is stabilizing and the general avalanche risk is low today. However there is a risk of a surface crust slab slide in steep faces in 1200m north face and the NW Iwao facing ridge line. Due to temperature rise, a chance of a slide of wet/heavy surface snow will rise this afternoon in the Backbowl and upper Osawa. The mountain terrain has been modified by the bad weather that continued for the past 10 days; be careful when choosing your route in backside Higashi-one, NW Goshiki onsen face’s knoll and upper ridge area that have been highly effected by the strong N-NE wind. There has been a major avalanche that reached all the way down to the road in the NW face in the past. It is strongly not recommended to rest at the bottom of the slope or in the gulley. The peak gates will open at 9am. Remember, outside the gates is not the resort no more. Enjoy your day.
