冬型の気圧配置で海上、山共に風雪。時間帯により風の強弱があり、場所によりふきだまりの圧密構造が不安定。標高1000m以上南東斜面、雪庇斜面では弱線破断による50cmの面発生表層雪崩が起こる可能性がある。風が弱まっても午前中は標高差の大きい開けた急斜面の滑走は控えたほうが良い。20cm程度の適度な湿り気をもち反発のあるニセコ的な雪がゲレンデ周辺に積もっているが、観測と各データの評価から全体の雪崩リスクは低い。雪崩は自然現象であり条件がそろえばいつでも起こる。またそこに人がいなければ事故は起きない。常に用心を。

A winter pressure pattern is bringing wind and snow to the sea and mountains. Wind strength varied through yesterday and the snowdrift compaction structure is unstable in some areas. On SE slopes and cornices above 1,000 meters, there is a possibility of a 50cm surface avalanche due to weak layers fracturing. Even if the wind dies down, avoid skiing on open, steep slopes with large elevation changes in the morning. Approximately 20cm of Niseko-style snow with moderate moisture and bounce has accumulated. Observations and data indicate that the overall avalanche risk is low. Avalanches are natural phenomena and can occur at any time if the conditions are right. But if no one gets caught in one, there is no accident. Always be on guard.

Discussions regarding gate opening and closing are continuing, but there is still a lack of snow, making rapid rescue operations difficult. A typical winter pressure pattern resulted in a blizzard which peaked at 2:00 AM, after which the isobars widened. Winds and snow continued, with an average wind speed of 15 m/s at 1000m. However if the isobars narrow again, expect wind and snow to strengthen. From observation, snowfall trends, and data, it appears that snowdrifts (wind-driven snow slabs) are stabilizing and the avalanche risk is beginning to decrease. However, we need to wait until the wind dies down and the slabs are able to consolidate and stabilise before disturbing them. The snow is excellent, but it is still thin. Be careful of hitting trees along the trails. You can’t beat trees. Patrol is worried about injuries. The slopes are starting to look good. There are a lot of people, so please ski safely. There is no safety in this sport. Please be considerate of others and ski safely. Cutting in line on the lifts calls into question your dignity. 未明にかけて強い地吹雪、山麓もふきだまり発達、量はまだ少ない。観測と各データから上は北寄りの風強く雪庇ふきだまりが急激に発達、吹雪には強弱がありスラブ発達は一様ではない。試験からこのウィンドスラブは衝撃で弱線破断しやすい。評価から本日の雪崩リスクは高い。吹きだまりが80cmを越えたコース脇の急斜面は表層雪崩が起こりやすい。新雪を求めて安易にコース脇のロープをくぐってはならない。急な気温低下と雪不足でゲレンデ状態は悪い。木も石も藪も人も多い。衝突に注意。スキー場からのコース外滑走はまだ出来ない。私たちも困っているが皆さんも今しばらくの辛抱を。風が西寄りに変われば雪は増える。降雪推移に興味を持つことを勧める。このスポーツに100パーセントの安全はない。凍傷と路外転落に注意。良い一日を。

Heavy blizzard conditions and a little snow into the early hours brought some minor snowdrift development to the base of the mountain. Observations and data indicate a strong northerly wind with rapid cornice and snowdrift development higher on the mountain . Blizzard strength is fluctuating and slab development is not uniform. Tests indicate this wind slab is prone to fracture on weak layers from impact. The avalanche risk today is HIGH. Surface avalanches are likely to occur on steep slopes beside the trails where snowdrifts exceed 80cm. Do not thoughtlessly duck ropes beside the trails in search of fresh snow. The sudden drop in temperature and lack of snow have left the slopes in poor condition. There are many trees, rocks, bushes, and people. Be careful of collisions. Off-trail skiing from the ski resort is not yet possible. We are also having trouble, so please be patient for a while. If the wind shifts to the west, expect increased snowfall. A weak winter-type pressure pattern brought cold air, but no new snowfall. Conditions were calm both at sea and in the mountains. The snow is hard, good for alpine skiing training but the worst conditions for powder ski lovers. The slopes are crowded. Watch out for collisions.

This avalanche information was started 40 years ago to prevent accidents, after being troubled by frequent avalanche incidents. Heavy snowfall from Sea of Japan blizzards and easy lift access to fresh snow on the slopes drew large crowds to Niseko, contributing to the high accident rate at the time. 日本海を低気圧が北上し暖気流入、新たな降雪はわずか、ニセコは未明にかけて雨、雪は緩み融雪が進む。

この情報は事故防止のために続けられており、多くの事故が悪天候下で起こっていることから、気象推移によるふきだまりの発達過程の観測とそれを数値で確認する各データの変化を危険判定の目安としている。吹雪によって急激に風下に堆積して量を増すふきだまりは風が弱まるまで構造的に不安定な状態が続く。そこを刺激すれば瞬時に広い面積が破断して面発生表層雪崩を起こす。確かに雪崩は弱層から起こる、しかし雪崩が起こる前にピットチェックでそれを予測するのは不可能ではないが大変困難と言える。事故後に原因がわかっても後の祭りであり死者は還らない。吹雪の中で風下斜面を刺激しないことが事故防止には最も確実な対処法でありニセコではそのためにゲートの開閉を行っている。知識への過信が事故を起こす。大勢が吹雪の危険を正しく理解してそれを常識とすれば事故は起こらない。

A low-pressure system is moving north over the Sea of Japan, bringing an inflow of warm air. New snowfall has been minimal, and Niseko experienced rain through the early morning, causing the snowpack to loosen and melt.

This information is provided continuously to prevent accidents. Given that many incidents occur during severe weather, we base our danger assessments on the observation of wind slab formation and the numerical analysis of shifting weather data.
Wind slabs that accumulate rapidly on leeward slopes during blizzards remain structurally unstable until the winds subside. Any stimulations in these areas can cause a wide-range fracture, leading to an instantaneous soft-slab surface avalanche. It is true that avalanches originate from weak layers; however, predicting them through pit checks before they occur—while not impossible—is extremely difficult. Understanding the cause after an accident is too late, and will not bring back those who have been lost.

Avoiding stimulating the leeward slopes during a blizzard is the most reliable way to prevent accidents. This is precisely why Niseko manages the opening and closing of the gates. Overconfidence in one’s own knowledge often leads to disaster. If everyone correctly understands the dangers of a blizzard and treats that knowledge as common sense, accidents can be avoided.

The wind is calm under the high-pressure system and the mountain and sea is quiet. The past 12h snowfall is small without notable cornice and snowdrift development. Most common slopes are stable and the general avalanche risk is small. Snow is lacking at the bottom of the hills and many people need to share the narrow groomers. Beware of collisions. The backcountry gates are not yet open for out-of-bounds skiing from the resort. Do not duck the ropes or ski outside the resort boundaries. Please respect the Niseko Rules. After 2 days of +5℃, cold air will finally start to flow in from this afternoon. The temperature dropped to -10℃ at 700m elevation. The slope condition is pretty bad and some trouble is seen in the chairlifts/gondola mechanism due to drastic temperature changes. The general avalanche risk is low, however in steep slopes with significant elevation changes, such as the sidewalls of the Backbowl, thin but hard “wind slabs” are prone to fracturing over wide areas. This increases the risk of high-speed surface avalanches, often referred to as “magic carpets.” Do not approach these areas. The courses are crowded and many beginners are present in the lower areas. Beware of high-speed collisions. Ski schools and groups must not stop in the middle of the trail or obstruct the flow of other skiers and riders. Have a nice day.

The influx of warm air will continue tomorrow. Creek levels have risen and snow bridges are more likely to collapse. The water is cold. We are currently under a high pressure system, ocean waves and winds have decreased, and only light snowfall fell overnight. Data and observations indicate that cornice formation has settled and avalanche risk is low.  The low temperatures continue, making the slopes excellent, but there is a lack of snow.

The bamboo grass and bushes  off-piste are still not buried, making off-piste skiing from the ski resort impossible. Niseko Rules were established out of necessity due to many accidents. A diverse range of people visit ski resorts to enjoy the snow. The Rules are in place to ensure the safety of all ski resort users. Please respect the Niseko Rules. The slopes are crowded. Don’t be overconfident, ride within your limits. Accidents can happen.
