No snowfall or rain. This information is issued to prevent accidents off piste for ski resort users. Due to frequent accidents in the past, “Niseko Rules” were established many years ago to govern a system that allows skiers to ski in out of bounds areas in an effort to reduce accidents. Although not officially recognized by the government, it approves of the current situation. This report provides information on daily weather data and observations, danger of surface avalanches, when accidents are most likely to occur, as well as explaining other possible dangers such as cornices collapsing, collisions with trees and getting lost in poor visibility. Education to prevent accidents. Accidents can be reduced if everyone heading into the mountains understands the dangers of the day. Peak gates are scheduled to be open today. Please listen to the patrol’s advice and prepare before exiting through the gates. There is no safety in this sport, but it is good for your mind and body. Have a nice day.

Moiwa Mountain base -2℃,trace new snow, intermittent gusts. Moiwa 800m: -4.7℃, NNW13.6m/s, strong winds, wind blown cornice development. Mikaeri 750m: -5℃, NW2.1m/s, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -7.1℃, WNW6.3m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -6.3℃,  NNE10.7m/s, wind blown snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape N9m/s, Kamui Cape NW8m/s, 1004hPa, wave 1.9m.

A typical winter pressure pattern, northwest winds from midnight to dawn caused snowdrift and cornice development. Cornices are breaking easily with little stimulation. Cornice and snowdrift development has been from drifting snow, not new snowfall. Snow on the slopes has been blown by the wind and drifts on the leeward slopes above 800m are breaking easily this morning. This information is issued to prevent accidents among ski resort users. Accidents occur due to carelessness. Accidents can be prevented if everyone is careful. Do not duck ropes to leave the ski area, use the gates. Never enter Strictly Off Limits areas Haruno Taki or Yunosawa. The risk of full-depth avalanches is increasing. To avoid danger, stay out of the bottom of Osawa and Kozan no Sawa. Cracks in the slopes are deep, up to 5m. Be careful not to fall in. Although Niseko allows out of bounds skiing, we are always concerned about accidents. Be careful of cornices and snow bridges suddenly collapsing. Also water in the creeks is rising. All gates are scheduled to open. Please listen to the patrol’s advice and prepare before going through the gates. Have a nice day.

Mountain base +4℃, rain. Moiwa 800m: +1℃, SSW6.4m/s, thick fog, poor visibility and raining. Mikaeri 750m: 0℃, S3.7m/s, thick fog, bad vis, rain. Annupuri 1100m: -0.2℃, WSW13.2m/s (20m/s gusts @ 4am), poor visibility. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: +0.4℃, S17.9m/s (27m/s@4am), bad visibility. Coastal data: Benkei capeW16m/s (7m/s@5am), Kamui cape SW18m/s, 992hPa, 1.4m waves. The cold front passed at 5am.

The cold front from the low-pressure system in Sakhalin passed around 5am and the wind shifted from south to west. Windy conditions will persist above 700m elevation throughout the morning. The rain below 700m is forecasted to stop around 9am. The rain and thaw running down to the ground through the glide cracks could trigger glide avalanches. Stay away from valley bottoms and don’t stay on the slopes of Moiwa bowl, Miakeri bowl, Backbowl, Osawa bowl and Higashi-One. Glide avalanches can occur in slopes with or without existing cracks and are extremely destructive. Glide avalanches are already happening in strictly off-limits Yu no Sawa and Haru no Taki area. It is highly likely that one will occur in Yu no Sawa’s Annupuri side slopes in the near future. Nobody must enter these slopes. Wool baselayers are recommended as they will keep you warm even when wet. Nature can be punishing sometimes and that is why it makes this sport very demanding. Have a nice day.

Mountain base +2℃, no snowfall, overcast. Moiwa 800m: -2,2℃, SSE4.6m/s, no snowfall, overcast. Mikaeri 750m: -2℃, ESE1.8m/s, no snowfall, overcast. Annupuri 1100m: -4.1m/s, WSW6.4m/s, no snowfall, thick fog poor visibility. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -3.7℃, S11.8m/s, strong wind, no snowfall, foggy. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSW4m/s, Kamui cape S17m/s, 1003hPa, 1.6m waves.

The temperature rose and snow is melting at the base, however cold air is flowing in above 700m and a thick fog lies above 1000m. Strong southerly wind is blowing in the Hirafu side and the chairlift operation is on standby. Gates opening is to be determined, please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Of course, skiing out of bounds is at your own risk, however, in Niseko, gates will be shut/open from accidents prevention measures’ perspective. Stay away from the valley bottom to avoid being caught in glide avalanches. Do not stimulate cornices and knolls as they could trigger a slide. Do not sneak into strictly off-limits areas behind the back of the ski patrols. If an accident occurs in these areas again, the repeat offenders will be held liable. The weather and snow conditions change quickly in Spring time. Stay vigilant. Is your avalanche beacon switched on? Are you carrying a shovel, a probe and a short rope? Mountaineering and ski touring are wonderful sports, however everyone should be aware of the risk involved in them. Have a nice day.
